Opening the door to a nuclear-weapons-free world: UN Open Ended Working Group off to a positive start!

A new and exciting United Nations nuclear disarmament process got off to a very positive start with its first two weeks of deliberations in Geneva on May 14-24, 2013.

The Open Ended Working Group on Taking Forward Multilateral Nuclear Disarmament Negotiations, established by the United Nations General Assembly, injected a breath of fresh air into the political environment that has for the past 17 years prevented any substantive work being undertaken by the Conference on Disarmament (CD) – the world’s primary multilateral disarmament negotiating body.

World-class runner Wilson Kipketer spoke in Basel on the power of sport to overcome conflicts

The long-standing world record holder in the 800-meter run Wilson Kipketer spoke on a panel discussion of the Basel Peace Office about peace and sport on 24 May. Kipketer, originally from Kenya, is a Danish former middle distance runner who was three times world champion in the 800-meters in the 1990s. From 1997 to 2010 he continuously held the world record over 800 meters.

Reflections on the May sessions of the OEWG and visions for successful outcome

Over the past two weeks, the OEWG engaged in lively discussions that covered numerous proposals for nuclear disarmament. The discussions provided a useful knowledge base necessary for further evaluation of particular proposals. The catastrophic humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons, that have been highlighted throughout the sessions, reminded us of the reason why we sit here in this room trying to find a way to disarmament.

However we dare to say that the most valuable thing, that has been expressed by a majority of delegations attending this meeting, was the recognition of a simple fact – that if we ever want to make progress in disarmament, we have to bridge the gap between various proposals and define a new way, an approach, or a roadmap, that will be feasible for all.

We highly appreciate the openness of delegations in this regard and we would like to present a couple of concrete recommendations that could facilitate a systematic work of this group on proposals to take forward multilateral nuclear disarmament negotiations.

Government delegates and non-governmental observers to the Conference of States Parties to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (the 2013 NPT Prep Com) in Geneva were reminded on Monday of the important role that parliamentarians have in the shared goal to achieve a nuclear-weapons-free world. The reminder came from a joint panel of Parliamentarians for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Disarmament (PNND) and the Intre-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Washington congresswoman seeks support for Act on Nuclear Weapons Abolition

On April 18, 2013, Washington DC's Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton introduced the HR-1650, the "Nuclear Weapons Abolition and Economic and Energy Conversion Act" which calls on the United States government to negotiate a multilateral treaty for the dismantlement and elimination of all nuclear weapons in every country by not later than 2020; and for strict and effective international control of such dismantlement and eliminatio

Abolition 2000 at Faslane: Get Rid of the Nukes!

A delegation from the Abolition 2000 Global Network for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons visited the Clyde Naval Base in Faslane, Scotland today (19 April 2013) where they released the Faslane Declaration, which calls on the UK to remove the nuclear weapons based in Scotland, abandon nuclear deterrence and join negotiations for global nuclear abolition.
