Escalation or Reconciliation for Ukraine

The international community has overwhelmingly opposed the Russian invasion of Ukraine, launched on February 24, as an illegal act of aggression, and has also opposed the war crimes being committed by Russia during the war. These include direct attacks on civilians and civilian areas in violation of international humanitarian law.

UK and Netherlands nuclear policies challenged in the Human Rights Council

The nuclear weapons policies of the UK and the Netherlands have been challenged in the UN Human Rights Council this week as being in violation of the Right to Life, a right enshrined in Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

Nuclear weapons and the UN human rights bodies

On October 30, 2018, the UN Human Rights Committee (HRC) adopted a new General comment No. 36 (2018) on article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), on the right to life, which concludes that the threat or use of nuclear weapons is incompatible with the Right to Life and may amount to a crime under international law.
